Workshop for Patent Drafting of Intellectual Property at Unsyiah in 2019

 

To improve understanding and researchers’ abilities regarding to intellectual property especially for patent drafting, the Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM) collaboration with SPIRE-Erasmus Program conducted workshop for Drafting Patent of Intellectual Property in June, 26, 2019 at Universitas Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah) attended by 35 lectures from Unsyiah.

Dr. Drs. Syamsulrizal, M.Kes as secretary of LPPM Unsyiah said that he appreciated this workshop patent drafting and he expected that the workshop was able to improve the number of patents produced by Unsyiah’s researchers. Unsyiah regularly conducts this kind of workshop to improve the number of Unsyiah’s lectures to apply their research products for patent.

Dr. Abdullah as the Head of the Center for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) at Unsyiah said that starting from 2018, research conducted by higher education should be on output and outcome bases as stated by the ministry of research, technology and higher education. The number of patents produced by higher institution reflected credibility of the institutions. Therefore, patent as one intellectual property rights has beneficial effects to universities in the process of accreditation. Right now, Unsyiah is one of public service agency universities in Indonesia as stated by rectors should have 30 patents in 2019. Based on the data, so far Unsyiah has already had 3 new granted patents from 50 registered patents at Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

As key note speaker in this workshop was Drs. H. Said Nafik, SH. M.Si. from Ministry of Law and Human Rights. In his presentation, he mentioned that there are three philosophy sciences in writing of patent description namely novelty through ontology; inventive step through epistemology and industrial applicable through axiology. Research products from Unsyiah was very innovative and had a potential product to get intellectual property right. However, due to limited understanding of patent procedures resulting in the number of patents at Unsyiah was still low. Therefore, this activity has an important role to improve not only the understanding of patents at Unsyiah staffs but also the number of patents at Unsyiah.
